Over the next couple months, I will post some photos of things I saw on the road trip.
This is the first installment. How many people remember Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson? I remember when their plane hit the field outside Clear Lake, Iowa. I was a fan of all three musicians. The day we arrived at the Surf Ballroom the place was buzzing with preparations for a dinner for Iowa Hawkeyes. The television crews were setting up equipment and the tables were set for dinner. We were given permission to roam and take photos. This was another check off my bucket list to see the Surf Ballroom in person.

I didn't know he died so early on
How very cool. I love those glasses.
Like Don McLean sings so poignantly... that was the day the music died.
I am glad you had such a fun trip. Doc is from Iowa (he is a Hawkeye) and has been to the Surf Ballroom. He said they used to get really big name performers there....maybe still do.
nice...cool first stop on your trip...kind of a neat little shrine eh...what a sad loss for sure...
Hubby is a HUGE Holly fan.
Did you see any ghosts? I hear the Surf Ballroom is haunted.
Love those glasses, a simple and perfect monument. Look forward to hearing about the rest of the trip - I do love a good roadtrip!
I remember when the news came that they had all died in a plane crash. But although I knew and danced to Buddy Holly's music, his loss didn't have a huge impact on me at the time as I was living in England. It was something that happened in far away America!
I remember when they died in that plane crash. It was so sad, but I didn't really realize how young he was, and what an impact he already had on music until I was much older. I look forward to your trip chronicles! :-)
What a cool stop to make on your road trip. I can't wait to see more! Gosh, he was young when he made it and way to young to die. What a shame.
I only know the story of those artists through the movie La Bamba. Their tragedy happened a few years before I was born. But I've known and appreciated their music through the years.
What a fun road trip you had! I love the idea of keeping it simple and just going wherever you want to go.
