Generosity

People's generosity sometimes blows my mind. The town I live in is full of kind and sharing people.

Probably half the houses have home grown vegetable gardens. Some of the delicious produce is prime right now, and people share the fruits of their labors with each other.  I don't have a garden, but plenty of folks are bringing me large amounts of fresh produce. Onions, tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes (red and gold), eggplant, cucumbers, and more.

The other day two friends with gardens brought me a small roast and lots of veggies including carrots and parsnips and turnips. They said they thought I would like to make a meal for my senior friends and that is what I did. I put all the veggies and the roast in my electric skillet on medium low temp and we had a delicious meal before a fun time playing dominoes. My friends are still talking about that meal!

My trough is full.

Oink.

I like that timely space before the oink! (it made me laugh)

Isn't it amazing how veggie gardens draw people together? I know someone who grows so much that she puts it in boxes near the street so neighbors can help themselves.

Our neighbor, across the road from us, always plants a pretty large garden and I plant one, but on a much smaller scale. But the neighbor's garden produces a whole lot more in terms of variety and well as quantity and they are very generous in sharing. They've already given us some vegetables they have in abundance along with blueberries he's grown too. (His wife calls him a "Truck Gardener" in his retirement. Now they have green peppers which are nice and big enough to use for stuffed peppers so we'll be able to have that for supper this week. Works great for us because my peppers aren't doing very well this year! (Small and only one pepper per plant and I only planted about 6 bell pepper plants so pretty skimpy rewards there. On the bright side, if the deer don't bother my tomatoes (and they don't like squash), I may be able to return their generosity with some squash, at the very least. Last year, I had a whole lot of squash so gave it to neighbors and also, shared at the Harvest Table at our church too. Things just not growing as nice this year as they did last year though for me! Drats!

I am enjoying my community garden, too. I got my first zucchini squash off my plant, not likely to be the last, either. Blossoms on my delicata squash plant! Yayy!

I love gardening and wonderful neighbors like you've got, CiCi.

I am not a gardener myself (maybe someday) but enjoy watching the gardens of others grow and produce. My youngest daughter planted a garden this year....some things did great, others not so well. Right now I am getting zucchini or zucchini bread every time I go there.

I love how you write about these good people in your life! Reminds me of when I was growing up and all the fresh produce we would have even though we didn't have a garden! Oink away!

Gee, that's a wonderful thing, both your friends bringing you the fixings and you cooking up the nice meal for other folks!

Nothing beats fresh vegetables. Many years back, I drove a delivery truck for a fruit and produce company. One of the perks of the job was being able to take home as much fresh produce as we wanted. I was never so healthy! And fresh stuff tastes so much better!

A testament to the high quality of your neighbors. AND I'm sure you deserve being treated so well.

Truth be told, i've been living in my own house for almost 2 years buti NEVER spoke to any of my next door neighbours.

It is just me, my very antisocial self, and i do not take other people cr** lightly.

So again, i do envy you and the nice people you have around you.

Just this afternoon I passed a stand by the side of the road selling corn on the cob. The sign said "self serve" and there was a place to leave your money if you made a purchase. I just love that kind of trust.

How lovely, CiCi. I'm sure their kindness to you is reflected in how you treat folks.
