Cute Hat

The director of the senior center told me a funny story.

She is a young woman in early thirties. She is not a senior. She loves the seniors and runs the center like a home, cooking for us, learning our different needs, encouraging us.

Each day she has a routine. She arrives early and dons the white hair net that looks like a shower cap. She has long hair that is in a twist or pony tail when she arrives at work. She starts the commercial size coffee maker with three pots. She prepares the lunch and does her paperwork in her office. She works for the ten member board of directors as well as the Eastern Nebraska Office On Aging.

When she leaves the senior center for the day, she is usually hurrying to get errands done so she is home before her daughter.
One day she ran in and out of the post office, a couple other stops, and then a sprint into the mini mart, our only market in town. As she was carrying her purchases to the counter, someone remarked "Cute hat". She reached up and felt the hair net/shower cap. She had been all over town with it in place. This woman takes her job seriously but that day as she pulled the "cute hat" off her head, she was giggling and told me the story the next day. I asked her for permission to share the story in my blog.

We all get used to things to the point we don't know we are doing it. Habits become mechanical, so automatic we don't think about them at all. I will be listing some of the things I do unthinkingly in another post; what are some of yours?

More about the director of the senior center in other posts.

The only thing I can come up with that I do unthinkingly, is the recent and not welcomed snoring! (after all the years of dealing with not being able to sleep because of hubby snoring, guess it's time for paybacks)(bad thing is, I wake ME up!)

In Malaysia, government servants have to wear name tags to work. This will include teachers, and as we go off earlier than the rest, it is so easy to spot teachers while shopping before they return home.

That's pretty funny! I remember years ago when I was working I wore a rubber cover on my left thumb to help with going through papers as I entered information on a calculator with my right hand. I was climbing into the bathtub at night and realized I still had it on, hadn't even noticed that I forgot to take it off!

The snoring waking yourself up is almost as annoying as hubby snoring, I bet. Hopefully, you don't wake all the way, just enough to turn over and catch some more zzzzz.

Are the name tags hung from something around the neck or pinned to your clothes?

I wear sweat pants with string at waist that needs to be tied. I frequently forget to tie them and have long strings hanging out from under my shirt.

Yeah, we have something to kid her about, especially since she wears the hat every day.

That's a good one, DJan. I wear rubber fingers now and then still, helps me flip through papers. For years I had a rubber finger on for hours. So I can relate to your story. I hope you laughed out loud when you saw you were still wearing it.

We don't use pins anymore, most used magnetic nametags so the shirt wouldn't be ruined.

I wrote a post quite awhile ago about accidently leaving a pacifier, nipple up in shirt pocket! I got a lot of attention!

Thanks for dropping by. Thinking of you. Quite a journey, isn't it?

First, love the look of the blog--bright and fresh. Second, great story. I smiled and enjoyed it thoroughly, especially since I got gas in my pajamas the other morning when I unexpectedly had to drop my son off at school (bus rider). Finally, happy to be back and visiting with you. Looking forward to skulking around and reading more.

Today is World Prayer Day, and the women of all the churches in town get together and prepare a program and songs. This year it was held at the Catholic Church. It was a wonderful experience for me. While I was there I was thinking of all my blogging buddies around the world.

Betty, I think your pacifier in the pocket story deserves the gold star. I have been giggling about this today. So thanks for bringing some fun to my life.

So glad to be in touch with you again. I look forward to reading your haiku in your blog.

That is so funny! Years ago I answered the door with a mask on my face. We had a good laugh about that.

I can imagine doing something like that! Off the top of my head, I can't think what I do without thought, but I'm sure a few of them will come to me eventually...

I can see you answering the door and seeing the look on the face of the person on the other side of the door!

Just yesterday I did something without thinking and will probably write a post about it.

The director sounds like a diligent and upbeat young woman. She might be an old soul. PS I am ALMOST finished with March. Enjoying the story!

She is energetic and has a good memory, both stand out among us seniors!

I am absorbed in reading this month's book club reading: The Butterfly's Daughter. Great story.

Oh so funny and it reminded me of something my cousin told me about ... .many years back.

Remember when they used to hand out stamps with your grocery purchase (I think you Amurikans had Green stamps but ours, at this particular store, were Pinky stamps)? My cousin was pregnant with her daughter (now a mother of her own three kids) and had a ObGyn appointment. After leaving the elevator but before heading into the doctor's office, she stopped to pee first. There was no toilet tissue available so she grabbed a tissue from her purse with which to dab.

Once inside the examination room her doctor did the usual check up and began laughing hysterically. My cousin could not understand her behaviour and asked what was so funny. The doctor reached back under the sheet and plucked out a Pinky stamp to show my cousin the reason for her amusement.

Yes, she wore a Pinky on her twinkie. ;)

Clearly, she's not a vain woman, either, for if she were, she'd have seen it in the mirror. She sounds like a gem.
