Be A Man

It is fascinating to watch men meet for the first time. The nice to meetcha handshake says a lot to someone reaching out hoping to make a good impression.

Years ago women shook hands when introduced to someone new. Women in the executive workplace today shake hands firmly while making eye contact.  Did they learn that from the men they competed with for the higher paying jobs? What percentage of women is part of the good ol' boy network today?

I think women may be 20% of the network and still growing. In order for both sexes to understand equality in the work force as well as equality at home we need to show by example the next generation that we work together to attain balance in life. Wanna shake on that?

Where in the world did you find that drawing? I see "The Art of Manliness". Is that a book from the old days?

That is a wonderful illustration. You're right: I would shake hands with someone new when I met them at work, and still do today in the coffee shop when introduced to someone new. It's interesting to realize there are many ways to do it. Have a great weekend, CiCi!

Just this week I was watching when my 11 yr old grandson was being introduced to an older man and I was watching for these things. I don't know about the firmness, but otherwise it looked like he did a "manly" job.

I dunno, CiCi. I'd extend my hand for a shake but I think I know you well enough that I'd rather give you a hug.

I think it's nice to extend a hand toward someone when you meet them and a handshake lets us keep our personal space, but still form that little bridge. Then later, when you get to know someone better, you can move onto a hug. Through the years, I've even seen men hugging socially more and more. They do add those firm back pats, but it's nice to see...

Having a son, I felt compelled to instruct him on how to give a proper handshake. Believe it or not, I've found that a poor shake can prevent you from being liked or even getting a job. Few men will admit this but it's true.

I know a few guys with the death grip. I think they do it on purpose.

Outside of the workplace I'm a hugger but I've always chosen to shake hands with a smile and eye contact when meeting new people at work. I'm now trying to think if I picked that up from work colleagues, family or somewhere else. Really enjoyed this post Cici, got me thinking and I loved the illustration.

The drawing was very interesting. It's true, we never realize that there is a style to the "manly" handshake, and women are adapting it as well. Small thing, but what a difference it can make:)

I tend to give a nice firm handshake when I'm shaking with men, but with my girl pals, it's all hugs.

I like the idea of sharing hugs instead of shaking hands. Well, sometimes...

Funny, I was just thinking about this. I sold a couple of bikes on craigslist recently - one to a woman, one to a man. Shook hands with the man, but not the woman. Culture?
